Missing Control Panel

ms

XP Pro. machine is offline.

IIRC, a week ago, Start Menu/Settings led to Control Panel.

Machine has been off, booted up today, Settings has only one entry- Task
Bar and Start Menu. There have been no changes, updates, installs.

Control Panel has vanished.

How to get the shortcut back to Start Menu/Settings?

right click on the start
button and select
properties.

if you look around
you will find the
control panel options
to list as link.

Thanks, that setting fixed it.

Now I can see what caused it. I am used to the single narrow column Start
Menu, in XP it's called Classic. Last time I used the machine, I selected
Classic. This week, in that, you don't see Control Panel, only in the
standard double-column style Start Menu.

In XP, is there a way to see the usual (W2K or W9X) single column Start
Menu with all the usual options?

it is likely possible with a third party
program like windows blinds.

but as you have seen winxp provides only
two choices.

however, i can provide a couple
of tricks and maybe you can figure
out how to get them into your
start menu.

open a run command window,
either by clicking
start > run

or pressing the
winkey+r

then type and enter
or
copy and paste the following:

control panel

[the control panel should
pop up]

you can also type and enter:

control admintools
control fonts
control folders

ok, now for the next tip:
on the desktop you can also right click and
create shortcuts with the above commands.

so now that you have created shortcuts
useable via the desktop, you should be
able to copy or move them into your
start menu.

now to make the start menu more manageable,
you can right click on the start button and
explore the folders containing the shortcuts
that would graphically appear on the menu
and your desktop. you can move, copy, paste
shortcuts with more control.

with the exception of more commands like
the above, i don't have much more to
contribute - except an opinion as to why
microsoft should include a feature that
provides views in winxp that look like
win98, win2k, etc.

Thanks for the help. It will take a little while to try the above. Since
I am constantly switching between a W2K machine and a XP and W98SE
machines for different purposes, it is desirable to make the interface
similar for my purposes.

I will post back.

I have a lot to do to customize XP Pro for my use. (this was a used
machine). So decided to leave alone the double column start menu, it does
what I need. But thanks again.
