Connection Refused?

Ok, I have a wireless router for my dorm and it is on the ground floor. When I
try to access certain sites, not any in particular (ex. www.apple.com,
www.myspace.com) and those are just 2, there are many more. I use a proxy
which can load the pages but won't let me sign in sometimes (like MySpace). I
talked to the guy that runs our netork and he has no idead whatsoever about
it, hes not really that computer smart, he's just the guy who generally runs
our dorm. I really hate it and it only happens with my computer (laptop) and
it doesn;t jsut happen on this wireless, my home doesn't work and neiter does
my freinds. Also, I can't really get any higher than 2 bars... even when
right nextt ot the router. And also, my computer can't connect to a hard line
like a Road Runner cable. It says that I am getting the internet but none of
the internet realted programs work, such as Mozillla. What is wrong with my
computer?

No, it is not! This will eliminate the problem as a general "Windows"
software issue. Sometimes, there are "software" that "lame" the TCP/IP
protocol and make the problem "look" as if the problem is hardware based.

In order to also make sure that this problem is hardware based and not
software is:

1) Run the latest drivers for the wireless adapter in the laptop.

2) Install/update the latest available chipset drivers for the laptop

3) Check of viruses/spywares with up to date anti-virus/anti-spyware utilities.

4) At least always get the latest security updates for Windows (if not all
updates!)

5) Locate and run "Winsockxpfix.exe" to rebuild the TCP/IP protocol stack
files.

6) if you can, by-pass the proxy.

If all of these steps do not help, then your wireless card may be "flaky" and
you may need to replace it.

Thanks guys, especially yves for the explanation. I'll try that or I may need
a new one, I've had this one for like 2or 3 years. I am using Mozilla, so
thats not it and it also happens with internet Explorer... On Mozilla it says
"Connection Refused at www.sitex.com" and on Internet Explorer it says "Site
could not be accesed". Also, things that connect to those sites, like Windows
Media Player could not get to the music videos because it can't get to the
site it gets it from... it can't connect to the MSN videos site. Also,
BitComet wouldn't work... stuff like that. It's really annoying but I have to
find a way to fix it. Also, do you guys have any suggestions about the only
getting two bars? It might be that the cardis going bad which wouldn't
suprise me. And also, what about not being able to use an ethernet cable?
Thanks guys... last time I posted this question I wasn't specific enough and
I got horrible results (they responded with questions)..

Ok, I installed new drivers and my computer couldn't find Winsockxpfix.exe...
and it still dosen't connect to the sites. More sites won't get connected to,
for example www.webshots.com, I uesed to be able to connect but I can't now
(this happened before the driver update, not your fault)
