cant see comp on a LAN

I have 2 computers running XPpro with SP2 and they are on a LAN. For some
reason I can see comp 1 from comp 2, but when I go to comp 1 I cant see comp
2. The Norton Firewall is turned off and sharing is on both comps.

Any ideas?

If I search for the comp by its name I can find it.

Thanks

Abe,

Can you access each comp by name from the other (after the search)? Are they
both in the same workgroup?

Check for a browser conflict between the 2 computers. I"m not talking about
Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that allows any computer to
see any other computer on the LAN. On a 2 computer LAN, you should run the
browser on one computer only.

Make sure the browser service is running on one of the WinXP computers. Control
Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and
the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Stop, then
Disable the browser service on the other.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power both computer off, then
power both on.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Hi, I'm going thru this Networking headache too, although I do find it
interesting indeed. ..To answer your question though, I think it could be
that your Browser is not turned on. This can be checked in the "Services" in
XP...good luck...

Generally speaking if you can access a computer by IP address and not by
name Domain Name Svc (DNS) is not available. If by name but not IP - most
common cause is TCP/IP not configured to obtain IP address automatically.
