Sharing file: Can see the gateway comp, but can't access!

I have Network at home and I have 4 comps + 1 comp (gateway comp which is
connected to the internet).

All computers run win Xp Home

I have set up the network using Wizard. (Simple) File and Printer Sharing is
enabled. Internet connection sharing is also enabled with no firewall on the
networks.

All other Four computers can access each other comp, share files and use the
internet through the Gateway computer.

The Problem is with the Gateway computer. It can access other four
computers and file sharing is possible BUT the other 4 computers can only see
Gateway comp (view workgroup computers) but when they attempt to access the
comp to access the files/folders shared by the Gateway comp, it gives error
msg "Can't access...you may not have been granted a permission, contact
administrator,, blah blah".

I've tried so many things including setting up IP addresses manually. I've
also tried to install IPX protocol and uninstall TCP/IP file sharing
protocol, and the prob still exist.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone would help me.
Thx.

Calvin,

Is Guest enabled on the gateway computer?

What folders are you trying to share on the Gateway computer? With XP Home,
sharing is authorised thru the Guest account, and folders like "C:\Program
Files" and "C:\Windows" aren't authorised for Guest. Check Sharing and Security
- Properties for the shares in question. Look under Sharing - Permissions, and
under Security, and make sure Guest (or the Everyone group), with appropriate
rights, is listed in BOTH Permissions Lists.

Guest is not enabled on the Gateway comp, the same for all other 4 comps.
I am trying to share normal folders in my document, desktop, etc.

Thx Chuc for patiently replying.

I have already enabled guest accounts for ALL computeres including the
gateway comp.

However the problem persists. The problem is not about not being able to
access the shared folder, but rather Other 4 computeres cannot even view the
shared folders. (Funny though, the Gateway comp is visible under workgroup
and ICS is working fine).

When I double click on the Gateway comp, it says cannot log in blah blah..
"no permission to access the computer blah blah...

Could there any possibility of virus attack or something that screws up the
file sharing?

Regards.

Calvin,

Ther's always a possibility of a virus screwing up file sharing. Ther's always
a possibility of anything bad being caused by a virus - but there are other more
likely possibilities too.

For one of the shares in question, check Properties - Security, AND Sharing -
Permissions. Guest, or Everyone, needs to be in both access lists.

The "cannot log in blah blah.." is an access issue. What is the blah blah -
that may be useful to know.

Between the gateway computer and one other, in both directions, test shares
visibility (use actual name / address of each computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / EXACT error displayed in each test (8 tests
total).

The gateway computer displayed under workgroup may be a browser issue - the
browser (No I'm NOT talking about Internet Explorer here) may be listing the
gateway computer from a past visibility.

Between the gateway computer and one other, in both directions, test shares
visibility (use actual name / address of each computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName

Between the gateway computer and one other, in both directions, test current
connectivity:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (12 tests total).
