File Sharing

I have two computers running XP home ed. They are linked through a D-Link
router. Both have file sharing enabled. I have set permissions for both
computers to share the "Shared Documents" folders. Both are on the same
workgroup and can see each other. I can share printer and shared docs from
comp 1 to comp 2, but not from comp 2 to comp 1. I have tried the
troubleshooting in help and support. I have checked and both have the
firewalls set to allow file sharing. Any suggestions what to check next?

What firewalls are set? Are they the only ones - what antivirus protection do
you have?

If no help yet, diagnose the problem. Please provide "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a start. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Here is ipconfig and browstat from computer whichcan read the other:

<SNIP>

OK, John, here's what we know.
# Both computers are on subnet 192.168.0/24, with DHCP server 192.168.0.1.
# Both computers have Node Type Unknown.
# Both computers are in domain / workgroup WORKGROUP.
# Both computers can see each other somewhat ("There are 2 servers in domain
WORKGROUP").
# Neither computer shows any sign of gratuitous protocols.

Let's enumerate the symptoms.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer
names and ip addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

system. first is cdiag for linda's. this is the one that can access ed's.

Very interesting. Look at the CDiags. No problem indicated in the run for
Linda's (HOMEUPSTAIRS / 192.168.0.102). The only problems are with Ed's
(HOMEUPSTAIRS1A / 192.168.0.100).

"HOMEUPSTAIRS1A ping homeupstairs1a"
Pinging homeupstairs1a [192.168.0.100] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

"HOMEUPSTAIRS1A ping 192.168.0.100"
Pinging 192.168.0.100 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

"HOMEUPSTAIRS1A ping 127.0.0.1"
Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

No problems indicated otherwise.

I'm going to bet that the problem is on HOMEUPSTAIRS1A. My guess is either a
firewall problem, or LSP / Winsock / TCP/IP corruption.

I have pretty much gone through the checks on the blog. I just got one other
piece of information that mey give you a clue. All of a sudden Microsoft
antispyware gives an error message that "unable to find an internet
connection" Of course I hace checked my tcp/ip stack and can obviously
browse ok. But you may know what special means MS antispy. uses that may be
related.

I've seen reports of "unable to query browser statistics" when people try
"browstat stats". The correct command is "browstat status". Which did you use?

First I used "browstat sts" that gave the unable to query response. When I
used "browstat status" I got the following:

Now, the comp I'm on is homeupstairs1a. homeupstairs is the one that can
access shared docs on 1a. 1a cannot access shared docs on homeupstairs. I
have no firewalls except Windows firewall on both. Both firewalls say they
allow file and printer sharing. I have AVG free antivirus on both. I run
Webroot spySweeper on both. Both have Spybot S&d with browser helper
(Immunization) enabled. Both have XP home SP2, Latest updates. Although the
XP on 1a is OEM (came on computer), while the version on homeupstairs was a
purchased upgrade from Win98.

The ping command not working for the internal loopback (127.0.0.1) (see my
observation 12/5) does not suggest NTRights or any other authentication
component. It suggests only LSP / Winsock / TCP/IP corruption, or maybe a
misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall. A loopback ping is VERY low
level, and doesn't even reference the drivers provided by the manufacturer of
the network hardware.

Maybe we will spot a clue from an LSP / Winsock enumeration. Let's try an
Autoruns listing first.

OK, AVG Antivirus. Now with an "Improved automatic Configuration Wizard for the
AVG Firewall". Which says that it may contain firewall components that may
affect networking.

Combine that with a previous installation of TMIS. Possible problem there, but
maybe you've resolved that.

If you have accomplished something by repairing the LSP / Winsock, now it's time
for another set of CDiag runs, so we can objectively identify what problems
you're still having.

I'll have a longer peek at your HJT log tomorrow - so far, nothing jumps out at
me.

OK. My avg is the free ver. which does not contain a firewall. I am only
using Windows firewall which I have configured according to avg free
instructions.
However two other possibilities. I recently tried Lavasoft personal
firewall, but have since uninstalled it (because I couldn't tell which was ok
and which not to allow because they only used technical language).
I noticed in the processexp (sysinternals) that my LSASS was labeled "Export
version" Shouldn't this be the US version? following is latest cdiag file

With Microsoft system components, your guess is as good as mine.

CDiag shows no symptoms, all tests are good. What problems are you experiencing
right now?

I am still experiencing the same symptom as I started with.
When I go to My Network places, Nd click on Shared Docs on Linda
(homeupstairs)
I instantly receive a message that says "\\Homeupstairs\shareddocs is not
accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. Access is denied."
This message happens so instantaneously it's like it's in a prefetch file
just waiting for me. Everything else takes a bit longer to start, even if I
just recently used the program.
