Cannot detect internet connection

Kodalika

When I go to FILE and Check for Updates, I get the
message "Warning - could not connect to the internet -
updates have failed. Auto updater could not detect an
internet connection."

I have a broadband always-on connection that is working
just fine. I also made a dial up connection and tried a
manual update and got the same message.

This message has just appeared - has been working fine up
until yesterday. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. I have a cable ISP, but
haven't ever had this problem with Microsoft or McAfee
updates. Can anyone help?

My ISP is a local one -- CTESC.NET which is using
Wildblue satellite connection. I do have a wireless
router, but my main computer that is having this problem
is directly connected with a CAT5 wire.

It appears that the scheduled Updater works but its when
I click on the manual "Check for Updates" from FILE, that
I get the error message.

Try deactivating the WiFi Connection checkpoint (Tools >
Real-time Protection > Internet Agent > View Internet
Agent checkpoints).

Also make certain that if you are running a firewall that
no changes have been made to www.microsoft.com's
wettings, as the app needs to access microsoft.com
(actually spynet.com, which is the Beta's subsite on
microsoft.com) in order to update.

I've also noticed a problem with AOL's AOL Dialer for the
current AOL 9.0 Security Edition SE. If you are also
using AOL, you might need to launch AOL to keep the AOL
Dialer from causing problems. I have RoadRunner, and
many times I have to launch AOL to allow access to the
Internet. I don't know if this applies to you since I
checked your ISP's site and it said that they offer dial-
up service as and additional option.

I don't have AOL.

The firewall is not blocking any microsoft sites or
spynet.com. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by
deactivating the WiFi Connection checkpoint. I have a
Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router that is connected directly
to my desktop computer. The wireless access is for my
laptop, which does not experience this manual update
problem. Do you mean to just take the router out of the
loop and connect directly to my satellite internet access?

Thanks,
Kodalika

I'm a little slow, but I did figure out what you meant by
deactivating the WiFi Connection checkpoint - but that
did not solve the problem.

Are you using build 615?

If not, download the current build from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyId=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-
DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en.

Then unistall MSAS using Start > Control Panel > Add or
Remove Programs. Delete the MSAS folder in c:\program
files\ and reboot the system. Now install MSAS and
reboot the system.

Even if you have the current build, try the above steps
as the application might have something broken.

I suggest to keep a copy of the installer somewhere on
your system so you can reinstall the app if needed in the
future.

Let me know if this helped.

Alan, thanks for your help. I did have build 615, but I
uninstalled it and downloaded it again (and saved it) and
now it is working as advertised. Hope it will stay that
way. Thanks again. Kodalika
