ZoneAlarm 8.0.065 breaks System Restore

I updated my copy of ZoneAlarm to 8.0.065 and have found that this has a
reworked interface, reduced functionality e.g. no zones and breaks system
restore! What are ZoneAlarm doing?
I have now reverted to 7.0.483 but accept that I will have to find a
different Firewall at some stage.

Yes

I got rid of Zone Alarm and went with Comodo.

No more problems

The built in SP2 and up firewall works fine, without any nagging.

I still use 4.5.594

Last free version that is small, fast and don't have lots of extra
stuff

For the average homeuser, the Windows Firewall in XP does a fantastic job
at its core mission and is really all you need if you have an 'real-time'
anti-virus program, [another firewall on your router or] other edge
protection like SeconfigXP and practise Safe-Hex.
The windows firewall deals with inbound protection and therefore does not
give you a false sense of security. Best of all, it doesn't implement lots
of nonsense like pretending that outbound traffic needs to be monitored.

Activate and utilize the Win XP built-in Firewall; Uncheck *all* Programs
and Services under the Exception tab.

In conjunction with WinXP SP2 Firewall use:
Seconfig XP 1.0
http://seconfig.sytes.net/
Seconfig XP is able configure Windows not to use TCP/IP as transport
protocol for NetBIOS, SMB and RPC, thus leaving TCP/UDP ports 135, 137-139
and 445 (the most exploited Windows networking weak point) closed.

Routinely practice Safe-Hex.

Recently, I received an automatic notice from ZA saying that V8.0.065 was
available for download. As I had used ZA since Version 4 relatively
trouble-free, I upgraded. Everything seemed to work fine.

Then yesterday, I tried to do a "System Restore" on my Dell XP SP3 machine
and found that the function was broken. After trying a number of tricks, I
finally called Dell tech support. I spent about an hour working with a guy
who finally told me that I would need to do a complete re-install of XP. At
that point I said thank you very much and bailed out as my computer was
working fine except for the restore problem and I wasn't about to go through
the hell of a re-install.

Then, I got lucky and read your post, un-installed V8 and re-installed V7.
Voila! Problem solved.

Now I realize that I should have backtracked to see what recent changes I
had made-- and I usually document them -- but this ZA upgrade seemed so
unrelated to the restore function problem that it just didn't occur to me
that they could be related.

Thanks, "T". One more lesson learned

Huh: no such problems here. Wonder what the difference is? I used
Restore yesterday to back up the system files to two days ago; worked
perfectly. V8 was installed a couple weeks ago IIRC.
Anyone check with ZA?

Perhaps your registrty cleaner fixed the problem before you used system
restore.

Are you still getting virus database updates for that old a version?

Zone alarm used to be the dog's whatsits of free firewall applications. But
now that it is run by a commercial company just about anything is better.
Zone Alarm have had several problems with updates that break PCs, but the
biggest problem of all is the interminable time it adds to a PC's boot time.

Version 5.x.x was tha last incarnation that was any good.

Why would you get virus updates when Zone Alarm has no such functionality?

M.I.5¾

Why bother to point that out when I implied as much in my earlier post?

Why does anyone use ZoneAlarm in the first place? Do they really believe
that scanning outgoing messages
is necessary? What real value has ZoneAlarm?

I use ZA a a firewall. 4.5 free has no extra mumbo jumbo.
I use a A-V program for the anti-virus part.

Hate programs that try to be everything and really isn't anything.

ZA 4.5 is a small firewall. Last vesion before they started adding
everything else.

I like to keep an eye on what applications try to do what.
My system would proberbly be quite as safe without, but I
like to see what is happening. ZA 4.5 does just that
(without adding lots of thing I don't want as the new ones)

I allready have other programs for A-V and Spyware handling
