kb 943232 and ZoneAlarm updates

S

sandpiperxx

I have been trying to install the latest upgrade for my ZoneAlarm Internet
Security suite (version 80_059_000). I get a message on screen saying 'Your
computer needs a Windows XP Service pack hotfix before you can install this
version of ZA Security Suite. Get hotfix kb943232 from the site below.....
I can download this hotfix successfully but when I try to install it I get
another message saying ' Setup has detected that the service Pack version of
this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to
install this update' I can then proceed no further as I get no option to
re-load or overwrite the original.
I have pursued this issue with ZoneAlarm, who have suggested various
remedies, but none of these work and I just get the same messages repeated.
They have suggested I now contact Microsoft to seek a solution. I trust
someone can help me resolve this issue.

What /DID/ the ZoneAlarm support folks suggest that you /DID/ try?

What is your system's file version of Sxs.dll?

Sounds like you requested the wrong hotfix version.

Resubmit your request and tick the box for Fix246379 (not Fix204652, which
is for WinXP SP2 despite what you see on the page) this time.

Steer away from ZA and look for *better* alternatives!

Thanks, Robear, but I can find no refereence to a 'Fix246379' in Microsoft
helpfiles. The hotfix I was called to install and which is causing me
problems was kb943232. How do I find and download Fix246379 ? Regards,

Thanks, Pete. ZoneAlarm basically recommended that I uninstall my existing
ZoneAlarm and then try re-installing version 8 in SafeMode with Networking,
but this gave the same messages as before about installing kb943232.
I am not sure what you mean about my system's file version of Sxs.dll - can
you elaborate?
Yours. Sandpiperxx

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

I assume the machine in question as WinXP SP3 installed. If not, STOP HERE
and reply to this message (quoting all of it in your reply this time).
====================
1. Open your browser to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943232

2. Click on the "View and request hotfix downloads" link.

3. Accept the EULA.

4. Click on the "Select hotfix" link & check the first box (i.e., the one
for Fix246379).

5. Complete Step #2 & press the "Request hotfix" button.

As counterintuitive as it sounds, you'd only request the SP3 fix if you were
running WinXP SP2. Since you're running WinXP SP3, you need to request the
SP4 fix.

Thanks again Robear, and apologies for amending the message. Just to
confirm, the machine is Windows XP, with SP3 (installed June 08), but I'm
afraid your fix has not solved the problem. I installed Fix246379 as per
your instructions, rebooted and tried again to install ZoneAlarm
80_059_900_en but got exactlly the same message as before, that is ' your
computer needs a WindowsXP Service Pack hotfix before you can install this
version of ZoneAlarm Security Suite. Please get hotfix KB943232 from the
site shown below... etc ' (The site being the same one as you refer me to
above).> Would removing and re- installing SP3 serve any useful
purpose, and are there any hazards in doing this?
Regards, George.

I think ZA's the problem, not your computer or WinXP SP3 or that hotfix.
Assuming you've purchased ZAISS and have your Product ID or license handy,
give this a whirl:

1a. If a Norton application has *ever* been installed (e.g., a free-trial
version that came preinstalled when you bought the machine), download/run
the Norton Removal Tool and reboot:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

1b. If a McAfee application has *ever* been installed (e.g., a free-trial
version that came preinstalled when you bought the machine), do Step #1 (if
necessary) and Step #2 of this three-step fix and reboot:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

2. Physically disconnect the machine from the internet.

3. Uninstall your current version of ZAISS (or other ZA application and
other anti-virus application) via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

4. Enable the Windows Firewall (Start | Settings | Control Panel | Windows
Firewall).

5. Reconnect to the internet. Download the full installer for the current
version of ZAISS and install it using your Product ID or license when
prompted.

NB: You're "working without a net" now. Don't do *anything* else online
until you've got an anti-virus application installed and fully updated!

6. Reboot twice after installing ZAISS, make sure the Windows Firewall is
now disabled, then run its updater manually and repeatedly until you get a
"no more updates" prompt.

Otherwise, either contact ZA/CheckPoint Support (you've paid for it!) or
stop at Step #4 above and install another anti-virus application of your
choice (and *insist* on a refund from ZA/CheckPoint).

Good luck.

Giddaye had the same trouble couldn t find the right hotfix anywhere Eventually downloaded the latest free trial version from ZoneAlarn. Before it would install it gave me a link to the the necessary hotfix which I downloaded. Then I used the activation number from the disk to upgraqde to the version I had paid for. When it goes to download updates it gives you the choice of using the 12 month free update service or purchasing a download of the lastest greatest version at greatly reduced cost Hope it helps Tony

I’d also like to add my thanks to PA Bear.

I’ve been having exactly the same problem as Sandpiperxx for quite some time. Applied the SP4 Hotfix as instructed and it worked a treat. Loaded ZA 9.1.007 and all is running OK.

Did have one problem. The process zlclient.exe was running continuously and using a large slice of the CPU. I followed a fix from another forum – set “Debug Categories” to “Off” – and all is now OK.

I guess I have only treated the symptoms and not the problem - there is obviously another piece of software on my machine causing ZA to log errors – but as long as everything is working OK I can live with that for now.

I now just need to find out why AVG is not scanning my e-mails and all will be well !!

George.
