Zipping cursor etc

A weird problem has just come up. When I click on anywhere in a Word
document, the vertical cursor indicating where text will be inserted from
time to time does not remain stationary, but zips along from line to line
without stopping. Or, when I click in a web form to indicate, for example,
how many tickets I want to book, the number zips all the way up from 1 to
the maximum without allowing me to select the number I want. I suspect some
system wide variable is at issue. Any ideas?

Peck on the right-cursor key till it stops sticking.

To be fair, that could probably be caused by "noise" messing with a
wireless keyboard or mouse. It might help to reinstall the keyboard
too. Go to the Device Manager, remove the keyboard, and restart. That
should reinstall the keyboard drivers. You could also try updating the
drivers from Device Manager, but I suspect Windows would say you already
have the best drivers for the device.
