you cant change the friken startup sound in vista

P

Paul Mckenna

gotta be honest i've not even noticed the sound... that has to piss the
composer off! :)

and smarty-pants... how will the millions of people who barley know how to
go to a
webpage find that option?

You mute the computer sounds and that still plays, does this go through your
thick skull?
You have to know how to go to that special place to mute that special sound!

HORRIBLE IDEA!

gesh... you should become an MS developer.. your ideas are as good as
theirs!

T

Travis King

They did it to basically brand into your computer that you're using a
Windows Vista computer. I don't know if I like that idea either, but I'm
not going to lose sleep over it...

There seems to be great confusion here.

You are saying to simply turn it off and others are saying it's a
hard-wired, imbedded within a dll.

Which is it?

P

Paul Mckenna

You say that but i bet tonight when you go to bed tonight you can't get that
sound out your head!!
Damn MS with their clever branding techniques.
Damn then i say!

Because its RIGHT THERE on the one page they go to, to Chnage Sounds.
Also if they went into the Help and entered "change sounds" or
something even vaguely similar they would be pointed to it.
Or god forbid they could come in here and ask someone like you.

No, it is the same place where you change ANY of the Sounds.
The fact that it sits there on a check box on its own make it even
easier for anyone to find.

Ha ! - if only you knew.

P

i think the thing is you can turn it off (Same as XP, but some people think
well hell they've added this why can't we change it) or i guess a hack will
come about soon to allow you to change it!

No confusion for me. Just uncheck the check box clealy marked "Play
Windows Startup Sound" and you PC will not play any sounds until you
logon, if you have a logon sound set

M

Mark Rae

LOL, seriously you can't?

You *can* change it, just not easily, and most certainly not through the
UI...

You can just turn it off, though...

In a slightly similar vein, try renaming the Network icon on the Desktop -
that's another good 'un... :)

T

Travis King

Well then I'll let you know tomorrow afternoon if I got to sleep and didn't
lose any...

Mike:
Glad to see you back. Sorry that you got caught by a troll. Have a
great Thanksgiving.

imagine this scenario....

you have a laptop with no physical sound controls on it...

you are in a house where thieves have entered to steal and probably kill
you..

they were smart enough to cut the phones before they came in...

and they are not sure anyone is in the house.. you are hiding..

In your despair and idea flashes in your mind.. why not log onto the
internet
and sent an instant message to someone for help???

Well you start your new vista laptop,.... and a firkin LOUD
1 million dollar 4 second start sounds plays...

After a few moments you are dead....

Your last thought was.. WHY??? I had muted the sound the last time I turned
it off?

- yes but you forgot about the SEPARATE option to turn off the other start
sound,
that is unaffected by the other sound controls...
And that's why you are dead... see?

Vista is stupid, plain and simple.

M

MicroFox

I wont appologize..

this is not a XBOX this is a computer.. you should be able to customize all
aspects of it
without hacking a dll

P

Paul Mckenna

Damn it Vista just plain and simple killed me.....Why!???????? why
bill.....Why!!!!!!!!!?????

Z

zaxon

If such a tiny thing bothers you so much you need to get a life.

Now you are really going off the wall. Damn, calm down!

If you give me your address I will send you some of my better meds.

Don't give HIM YOUR ADDRESS!! He will only hide outside and wait until it
is quiet inside your house. Knowing that your computer is turned off, he
will cut your phone line and come inside to get you. Knowing full-well that
you will have to resort to calling an IM buddy to save your life. And then
he will locate you by the Windows Startup Sound and come down the hall to
kill you!!!

First, I would throw away your PC. Then the worst of your life's fears will
be eliminated.

Then, I would move. Move. Move to a new location every 6-10 weeks in order
to avoid all of this wretched anxiety. Just keep moving around the rest of
your life. Don't look back.
