xppro hangs with usb devices

P

Pam

I'm having problems with a gateway GT5228 (2yrs old no warranty) - all the
usb ports that were originally connected to the main drive fried several
months ago - have no clue how/why - had to do a 'recovery' and buy a new usb
card - all seemed fine - that was 2 months ago - now - all of the sudden
when I plug in a usb device (camera/ect) the computer bings like it
recognizes it and then hangs - I have to then manually shut down as it's
frozen.

any ideas?

What does Device Manager show?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

thank you Gerry - yes - there are but its under Other Devices - there is a
question mark with an exclamation point on them on the Multimedia Controller
and the Multimedia Video Controller

would this cause the computer hang after logging into windows?

thanks

It means they are not working! It would cause a delay whilst the system
tries to resolve the problem.

In Device Manager right click on the item and select Properties to get
more information about each item, including the Device Error code.

Do you know your computer serial number as this is needed to view
available drivers, which is likely the cause of your problem.

Any "un-configurated" device can cause problems. You should see if
you can locate the drivers for these.

As for the older "dead" USB ports, if you were on the motherboard, did
you turn them off from within the PC'b BIOS / CMOS? If no, since
these are still "turned on," it can be the cause of your problems
since XP still thinks it can use these ports since XP still can find
these. You should turn off any "dead" ports if possible.

mmm - ok, the Multimedia Controller says that the driver is not installed
(duh)
when I click on properties it syas mnf unknown, location PCI Slot 1 (PCI bus
3, device 6, function 1)
Drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)

I did click on reinstall driver but of course it couldn't find anything. I
also went to gateway and tried to find it but was unsuccessful

when I click on the multimedia video controller properties, it says the same
thing except its PCI bus, 3 device 6, function 0

the SN of my gateway is CCE68 110 07280 Gateway GT5228 -

also - when I run belarc to see what's on the system - it says that I have
McAfee Virus Scan version (realtime file scanning on) I can not find that
(and hate McAfee) - I have found a folder under Program Files but it only
has a folder called SpamKiller in it - and it doesn't show up in the
add/remove programs - how do I uninstall this program? I also run Avasst and
Comodo so don't need McAffee

Thanks for all your help!

mmm well, Gerry might be able to help me locate the missing drivers - and as
far as turning off the dead usb ports...not sure I would know how to do
that - I'm comfortable messing around inside the tower - but when these got
fried (still can't figure that out!) I took it in to a shop and they added a
new usb card while it was there - so hopefully they turned them off - unless
there is a way to check it ??

thanks

However, I think you would be wise to talk to Gateway first.

thanks Gerry - checked that out - and talked to gateway - they wanted me to
pay to have the tell me how to get the drivers...so am looking for them on
my own...will never buy another gateway again - have had problems since day
one - will go back to having someone build one for me.

I have always had a small local computer supplier build the various
machines to order over the years. That way you get a better service
response and they get further business because they know me. You cannot
build a relationship with a large supplier.

The link I gave is most likely OK. It was certainly for your machine. I
cannot tell for sure whether it included drivers for the controllers you
identified. It could well do so. The other thing is that I do not
whether or not you already have these latest updates. I would not think
it would do any harm to take the download and install. The only thing is
it may not resolve your problem.

Does your computer have a Nvidia graphics card? That may something else
to look at.

It might help to have more information about your hardware. A freeware
version of Everest does a fair job.

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about
your computer:Everest Home Edition (freeware)

I have always done that myself and always have been more than satisfied - as
usually they go the extra mile...not so with the big guys :)

yes, I do have a Nvidia graphics card - I'll run the everest program and see
what I get - maybe I can copy paste the exact info and see what happens. I
did get a msg from gateway tech telling me I needed to do a full
restore...sigh....hate hate hate to do that again - did it about 3 months
give or take ago when all the usb ports fried.
May take it to my local guy that I use when I can't do things myself and
tell him to take out the gateway crap and build me a whole new deal...
course, then I'll have to come on line and ask for recommendations for the
best stuff to put in it :) ... I do a lot of graphic work - no games - but
rely a lot on the corel suite .

will come back with more info

thanks again Gerry!

wow....an Everest.....WAY too much info :) ... I have no idea what I'm
supposed to be looking at to see if something is or isn't working... is
there somewhere to go that can decipher this for me?
