USB not working

All of a sudden, none of my USB ports are working. I checked device manager
and is says that all 6 ports are working properly but when I plug into them
either nothing happens or I get the error message "USB device not
recognized". I was able to print pictures off about 5 minutes ago and now I
can't get anything. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers to
the USB root hubs too.

Not knowing the activities you have had on the PC during the "last 5
minutes" since the USB apparently were well working, is it hard to give a
precise advice on it, except for a start refer to the Microsoft article
"General USB troubleshooting in Windows XP":

Just in case you haven't noted the article.

I was using my printer and a camcorder. Both were plugged into USB outlets
and working fine, then all of a sudden they stopped working

Trying to verfy whether this is a soft- or hardware problem:

In case you are running SP2 with automatic updates, did you receive any
update during the "last 5 minutes" time frame (System (C:)\Windows and
$NtUninstall-- date time)?

In all the troubleshooting you already have performed, did you try:

Remove and reinstall USB controllers in accordance with the procedure
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575/en-us
by reconnecting only ONE device, preferably the camcorder, at a (different)
USB ports when available?

No updates within the 5minutes window and yes I did try that troubleshooting
method.

I would say here is "smell" of a hardware fault, provided that you in the
Device Manager\Universal Serial Bus Controllers\USB Root Hub\Properties for
USB Root Hub\Power Management, have verified that boxes on all root hubs are
unchecked? If not, uncheck, reboot and check if problem persists.
Just to ensure its not a problem with resuming from computer inactivity.

And, while at the Properties for USB Root Hub, relevant for the USB port
connected to device, check the Power tab for any indications.

thanks for all of your help but unfortunately the problem still persists even
after trying these suggestions

May best guess now is that there is a hardware problem, most likely with the
USB controller/motherboard, provided that ALL the USB ports are failing. If a
diagnostic tool is available for the make of the board (whatever it is), you
could run a test of it. If not I suppose my advice is to turn in the PC for
repair, or try to replace the motherboard yourself.

I do not see anywhere that you have tried a reboot - first logical thing I would
do.

Im'having the same problem: updated the BIOS, uninstalled and reinstalled the
USB devices 4 times. Mouse, PDA, work fine, USB thumbdrives don't, IPOD
doesn't.

I have had the same problem for weeks. I tried every bit of advice I could
get to no effect. In the end I did a system restore back 6 weeks and hey
presto it worked. I did a lot of googling on the subject and I believe it
is an xp bug. I could not get any of my USB 2 or 1.1 ports to load a driver
for a new device plugged in. It ran perfect with existing devices plugged in
but if I moved them to another port then it did not recognise them again and
no matter how I tried to put the driver its way it would not recognise it.
there is a patch for xp sp2 for a similar problem but after installing that
same problem. only a restore fixed it so I deduced a software prob
somewhere.

If possible; try a system restore to a time before the "5 minutes window".
Persistent problem supports the opinion of a hardware problem.
