Installed USB printer-now Windows XP hangs w/ USB devices

I've seen similar posts here about XP hanging. Installed a new HP USB
printer on Sony VAIO P4 2.4Ghz with XP Home SP2. Rebooted and the computer
would not load Windows even in safe mode (in safe mode, it loaded up to
mup.sys and would hang). Unhooked USB devices and Windows came back. Did a
system restore to an earlier date and did not resolve. Currently, the system
will run with the USB printer, USB Speakers and USB wireless network device
hooked up. If I plug in a USB hub (powered) it hangs, as do other USB
devices. 3 of the 4 back USB ports seem not to work. Currently using 2
front USB and 1 rear. Virus scan was clean. Any thoughts?

Sounds like 'not enough power for said USB devices...'
Buy a USB 2.0 with Power Adapter HUB...
Connect it and see if you can use more devices if you connect them to the
HUB...

Thanks for your reply.

I do have a 4 port USB 2.0 powered hub and it hangs the system if plugged
in, even without any devices attached. If I unplug most of the devices (ie:
new printer, network adapter) the other devices still don't work (ie: digital
cameral) even with only the smallest USB load.
