XP "would not start because...

I tried a repair but I end up at a C: prompt. If I do a reinstall over the

If you are at a C:\ prompt, you likely chose the Recovery Console.

If you do an actual repair install, you *shouldn't* lose the documents...
but life is never certain.

Take a backup, this is easy to do and can save you much grief. Simply
remove the drive from your system, attach it to another system with XP and
drive space, and copy the files over. Be sure you get your mail files,
etc., which may be in hidden folders.

USB2 drive cases are very handy for this, and can be had for around $20.

as an "actual repair install"? There is no repair option - only install.

I used that a couple of time until I finally installed a second
internal drive and used it to hold images of the system drive.

Now I've got Vista on the main drive, and XP on the second drive and
use yet a third internal drive for images.

Since I'm obsessive about backups, I also have an external drive to
hold images and other important backups.
