Fresh Install won't start!

This could be a movie. Drama, suspense, the unexpected..!
After a LONG series of challenges with an earlier install of XP, I
reinstalled. Everything went well; boot from CD, accept, install, etc,
reboot, answer questions, etc. Now if I start the computer, however, I get
the message:

"Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report
this problem as: load needed DLLs for kernel. Please contact your support
person to report this problem!" (Emphsis added)

Whoa! Fortunately I have a dual boot to win2k and can still get in there. I
need inspiration! Help!

A "repaired" install from the CD actually got me to a windows screen, even
on reboot, but I got a fatal errors all looking like, "could not open
c:\Documents and Settings\Larry Wight.Dell-Latitude\setup.lst" ... I'm sure
that this error has to do with the re-designation of drives mentioned below:
C: (the original drive where XP was installed) got re-designated as D:
during the installation of Win2K. I'm sure that is still confusing XP.
Ideas??
