XP won't Recover

I have a strange problem on my Gateway Notebook with Windows XP Home. I
started getting a virus notification and things were starting to quit working
(DVD's wouldn't play, wireless was hit and miss, etc.). It finally stopped
completely (BSOD on start-up). I tried re-loading the computer with my
recover CD's but nothing happens, just a black screen. I downloaded a boot
setup file and burned it to a CD from bootdisk.com and still nothing works (I
tried the CD on another computer and they work fine). I know my CDR\DVD is
good because I can load Linux on the computer without any problems and I know
my recover CD's are OK because I loaded another computer with them without
any problems. An old Windows 95 will boot up somewhat (I get an A: prompt,
which is funny since I don't have a floppy drive on that machine and hard
drive is G:). I spent over two hours on chat line with Gateway "Tech Support"
(what a joke) to no avail. I have re-formatted the hard drive with FAT16,
FAT32 and NTFS (used AEFDISK) but still nothing works but yet I can load
Linux (I have tried REDHAT, Gentoo and UBUNTU) and everything works great. I
am using UBUNTU now and everthing (DVD, Wireless, etc) works great. I intend
to keep it as my main operating system, but would like to figure out the
Windows XP problem. I've decided my computer has become an anti-Bill
Gates/Microsoft machine. Anyone have any ideas?

Well, you had a virus which may have corrupted the harddrive disk. I would
use a zero-fill utility on it such as one can get at no charge from Maxtor
[MaxBlast4]. Use it to create a bootable floppy that you can use to
zero-fill out the virus from the harddrive.

If that does not fix it, I would consider a memory problem as well. It could
be a coincident problem. Windows XP and other NT variants tend to be be more
sensitive to a RAM memory problem than some other operating systems. Use
memtest86.exe (well known) to test the memory and see if there is a problem.

Your computer is not "anti-Microsoft". It just wants some care and
attention.

None of those will do me any good since I can't boot Windows. I made a bootdisk CD from bootdisk.com and the same thing happens (black screen) as with my recover CD's. I do not have a floppy drive on this machine. Linux works fine and that was loaded from a CD. My bootdisk works on other computers, so that is good.

Maxblast and Memtest are both for creating bootable 3 1/2 inch floppy
diskettes to boot your computer. You run the utilities on these diskettes.
