XP corrupted. Won't boot

My XP seems corrupted. The loading stops when xp is to load. The screen is
blank. The hard drive doesn't spin. The only change i can think of is
downloading Amazons MP3 installer.

safe mode : it stops at pavboot.sys. i installed the online panda scan file
ages ago but never used it
recovery mode : it ask for admin password. I don't recall setting one. Blank
doesn't work
last good settings : nothing

an already installed Ubuntu worked ok.

What could be wrong and Is there any way I can recover the XP without losing
the stored files ? Perhaps in using ubuntu in some way ?
