corrupted XP. won't boot

My XP no longer seems to boot. I can;t think of any issue causing it. The
only change I cna think was that I downloaded Amazons MP3 download installer

in full mode : nothing happens (including hard drive). blank screen
in safe mode : stops early on when loading pavboot.sys. i had the online
panda scan installed but never used it.
in recovery mode : asks for admin. I don;t recall setting one and blank
doesn;t work.

The computer loads fine with ubuntu. Is there any way I could use ubuntu to
recover it or at least recover my media files

Yes, you can use Ubuntu to recover your files. You will need a computer with
two cd drives, one of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough
capacity to hold your data OR an external usb/firewire hard drive formatted
FAT32 (not NTFS)*. Boot with Ubuntu as a Live CD (IOW don't boot into
Ubuntu as a dual-boot) and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you
are using the usb thumb drive or the external hard drive, right-click on
its icon (on the Desktop) to get its properties and uncheck the box that
says "Read Only". Then click on it to open it. If you want to burn CD/DVDs,
use whatever burning program is available on the Ubuntu CD.

*My understanding is that you can now write to an NTFS partition from Linux.
If you wish to do this, Google for instructions.

Instructions: double click on the NTFS drive to open it.

Thanks. I got the files. They transferred without the need for clicking 'read
only' etc either
