XP won't read my DVD ROM

B

Brian Huether

Everything was working fine a couple days ago. I put in a DVD with map data
for my GPS software. All was good. Then today - nothing. No matter what sort
of DVD or CD I put in the drive, XP says there is nothing there. It detects
the DVD drive fine and I even updated the firmware. That leads me to believe
that it is a windows driver issue. But I have no idea how to update those
drivers. It says that it has the latest drivers already (asapi.sys,
cdrom.sys, etc)

Any ideas?

thanks,

brian

Drivers rarely "go bad" spontaneously. Also, XP has automatic support for
most DVD drives as readers. One normally would not have to load drivers for
a DVD reader.

Try using the XP device manager to uninstall the DVD reader. Then, use the
same device manager to redetect new hardware. That should force XP to
reload its default drivers.

Note: If you installed any CD and/or DVD writing software recently, that
could have done something to the read-drivers.

As a test of the hardware and connections, try booting the PC into DOS via a
floppy disk and then try reading any data-type CD (not DVD) in the DVD
reader. You can get a free boot floppy with generic optical reader support
from www.bootdisk.com.

You should also search this newsgroup for the upper/lower filter fix for DVD
drives.

I got it back to working... I took it apart, put it back together and it
worked. How oddd...
