XP won't log off or power off without multiple tries

Greetings, I have XP home edition with all the updates. 2.0mhz, lots of ram.
90% of the time, when I log off, nothing happens. If I try again, it
usually logs off. Sometimes, when I just power off, I have to do it twice
also. I use Nortons antivirus. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I
wait to confirm logging off, the screen turn black and white, too.

Thanks, Carl
