logging off

Hello,
I am running Windows XP Home and when I am on my desktop
I am unable to log off . I go to the start menu, choose
log off, but when I chose confirm to log off nothing happens... I stay
on my desktop. I am also unable to restart or shut down my computer
from
my desktop (I can only do it from the users screen). I
am capable of changing users, just not logging out...
any suggestions?
