XP won't let me log on

I purchased a Compaq laptop approx. 10 months ago with XP Home. I'm the only
one that ever uses it.

Whenver I turned it on, it opened directly to my desktop and bypassed the
log in screen. Yesterday I turned it on and it went to the big blue two
segment screen that says "To begin, click your user name." However, there is
no box (or anything else) visible on the right hand of the screen to click to
be able to log on. I can't log on or progress past this screen.

I've tried ctrl/alt/del to bring up the log onto Windows box but any word
that I might have used for a password when I bought the computer just gives
me a popup screen that says "The system could not log you on. Make sure your
user name and domain are correct, they type your password again. Letters in
passwords must be typed using the correct case."

Is there some way I can correct this problem and get back on to the computer
short of a re-install of XP?

Thanks for any ideas or options

Gary
