XP wont boot up...please help!

When I turn on my computer, it goes to the memory check, and the PNP Init
complete screen, but right after that, it goes to a screen with the following
info:

Diskette Drive A: 1.44M. 3.5 in. Serial Port(s) : 3F8
Parallel Port(s)
: 378
Pri. Master Disk: 81964mb, UDMA6 DRAM type :DDR SDRAM
Pri. Slave Disk: None SPD On Module (s) : yes
Sec.Master Disk: CD-ROM, UDMA 2
Sec.SLave Disk : None

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PCI device listing........

Bus no. Device No. Func No. Vendor ID Device ID Device Class
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
0 2 5 1039 5513 IDE
Controller
0 2 7 1039 7012
Multimedia device
.....

....and so on. There are 8 devices listed in total. One suspicious thing that
I noticed was that all the Bus numbers were zero, except for the last device
which had a bus number of 1. It is a Display controller.

At this screen, the computer just freezes and doesn't boot up. There is a
flashing curser at the bottom of this screen, as if the computer was waiting
for a command, but I can't type anything in.

I can't go to the screen where you can choose to boot up in safe mode; I've
tried. The only screens I can go to is the setup screen, by pressing
"Delete" and the EZ flash utility screen by pressing "alt+f2".

Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

PS: I have to use my dad's laptop for my schoolwork now, as I'm unable to
use the other computer...:'(

You can't get into Safe Mode (or any Windows mode for that)
because your Windows boot files do not get launched. This
happens if they are missing, perhaps because your file system
is damaged or destroyed.

See what you have by booting the machine with a Win98 boot
disk from www.bootdisk.com. You must then run this command:

ntfsdos.exe /L:MN

in order to see your NTFS partitions. You can get ntfsdos.exe
from www.sysinternals.com.

If this sounds too technical then you should take your PC to
a computer shop and ask them to have a look at it.

if the freeze occurs just prior to the loading of the operating system...
the bios may be set wrong.
you can restore the defaults and try it again...

if it's actually freezing upon loading XP
you should boot with your XP cd and from the repair console run chkdsk /r

other repair console commands that might be of use would be
fixboot
fixmbr

if nothing else...you can always try a repair installation

The OP does not say what brand PC, but if she only has a Restore Disk, He/She can use your advice.

Your boot files are damaged or non existent. You have 3 options as I see it.
1. Repair the boot files in Safe mode
2. Reformat your system
3. Take it to a professional repair shop
