I am a complete newbie system builder, and just finished putting
together the following system:

asus a8n-sli deluxe rev 1.02

When I press the power button, the following sequence of events
occurs:

(1) after 5 seconds the asus a8n-sli deluxe splash screen appears
(with "Press DEL to enter SETUP" at the bottom)

(2) after another 5 seconds the following screen appears:

SiI 3114 SATARaid Bios Version 5.1.39.
Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Silicon image, Inc.

Press <Ctrl+S> or F4 to enter RAID utility

(3) finally, after another 15 seconds, the following information
appears:

Diskette Drive A : 1.44M, 3.5 in. Serial Port(s) : 3F8
Pri. Master Disk : LBA, ATA 133, 122GB Parallel Port(s) : 378
Pri. Slave Disk : None
Sec. Master Disk : DVD-RW, ATA 33

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER


I wish to know the bios version number before I flash the bios with
version 1008. How do I find this? When I press DEL to enter the bios
setup, the version number does not appear on any of the setup screens
(unless I am missing something). I expected it to appear in step (3)
above. Conceivably it did appear here but scrolled by so fast that I
could not see it; if this is the case, how do I stop the scrolling?

I've always used the Pause/Break key, spacebar key to resume.

If you use WindowsXp, you may wish to wait until it
is loaded, and then use the tools for your motherboard,
to be found on the installation CD.

You then can read the version number, and then
decide whether you wish to flash the BIOS with a newer
version (I think 1011 is the latest) from within Windows
or wait until you reboot from a diskette

You didn't say where the Raptor's connected, but I assume that it's on
the nVidia SATA controller. Correct? Since you're not using the
SI3114 RAID controller, it should be disabled in BIOS before
proceeding further. Thereafter, you shouldn't see that message about
the SI BIOS on POST.

Note that some have had difficulty using DiamondMax 9 drives with
A8N-SLI series of motherboards.

He get's the wonderful but totally useless Asus A8N picture, with the
text at the bottom of the screen. If I recall correctly, you can press
escape when looking at the picture to switch back to the TEXT Milleron
describes.

If not, press del to enter setup, go to the BOOT settings and disable
the FULL SCREEN LOGO, save settings and reboot. Then you will see the
text and be able to read the BIOS version nr. where Milleron describes
above.

disable the Silicon SATA RAID in BIOS, and it will skip that bit when

There surely must be an easy way to see the POST detail screens -
without having to press PAUSE/BREAK and then SPACE.

I have further questions about flashing the BIOS, but I want to make
sure my computer is working like everybody else’s first.

I'm a little confused by this. I can't tell from the time stamps on
your two posts, but I'm deducing that you posted the message that
appears earlier in the thread AFTER this one. That message makes it
look as though you figured out how to view the entire POST. Correct?
Are you still having trouble with the BIOS finding an operating
system?

You’re right. I misposted. And I have figured out how to view the
entire POST. I was a little surprised to find the BIOS version to be
1002, since I received my A8N-SLI Deluxe from mwave at the beginning
of June (newegg was out of these boards at that time), and according
to Leif Nordmand Andersen’s reply to your post of 28 May, he received
version 1007 at about that time. Maybe mwave sent me a board from a
batch they received 6 months ago or so. Thanks very much for your
replies.

I recommend installing 1011 final. It's the best so far IMHO. I had
problems with 1008, as the hardware monitor stopped functioning
correctly with that one for me. Fixed that, but it was a pain in the ****.

I hope you got it to boot the right harddrive too now =)
