RAID-5 setup on A8n-SLI/DeLuxe

Hi all!

After I added 4 disks to the SilI-SATA connectors (Aiming to run them in a
RAID-5 setup) my 'puter refused to start.
Is there a specific order to proceed, to make this work, or did I just bump
something stupid while adding the hardware?

My spec:
A8n-SLI/DeLuxe
A64-3700+ 1MB L2
1GB corsair (2x512)
Gra: Sapphire Radeon X600 XT-VIVO PCIe16
Disk1: WD raptor 74G on nV-SATA1
Disk2: WD 200G on SilI-SATA1
Disk3: WD 200G on SilI-SATA2
Disk4: WD 200G on SilI-SATA3
Disk5: WD 200G on SilI-SATA4
DVDreader: Pioneer 105 (I think) on ATA pri-master

TIA /Ola J
DVDburner: Plextor-2500 on ATA sec-slave

How do you mean refused to start?

What kind of PSU? It's possible it can't provide enough power to spin up
4 drives on power-up.

It just sits there, getting nowhere..
No POST, no nothing.

My PSU is a cheapo "Jon Jye Electronic Co., Ltd." Model-No: JJ-550APSA, that
I rushed out to buy at a local store when I realised that my old 360W was
insufficient to drive the MoBo at all.

It has the following power ratings:
+3,3v: 24A=
+5v: 24A= 140W max
+12v1: 9A
+12v2: 9A
+12v3: 15A
+12v4: 8A
-12v: 0,5A
+5vSB: 2A

An older WD 120G (produced 2003) drive I happen to have lying around claims
to draw a max of 0,8A on 5v and 0,45A on 12v
Taking that times 5 gives me 4A on 5v an 2,25 on 12v, assuming my new drives
aren't a lot hungrier for current.
I think this ought to be within the limits of my 550W PSU, but I guess I
can't trust cheap crap like that.. :-(

Any and al hints are welcome /Ola J

Are you sure? Did you try the old PSU?

That figure usually doesn't include spinup current which is much greater.

Have you tried with only 2 or 3 drives connected, does it boot up then?

I would have to agree :) I would say if you care at all about your
computer, just don't use no-name PSUs like that one, it's just asking
for trouble.

Hi again.
Are you sure? Did you try the old PSU?

It didn't have all the connectors needed for this new MoBo.
That figure usually doesn't include spinup current which is much greater.

Have you tried with only 2 or 3 drives connected, does it boot up then?

I just tried with all 4 RAID-disks disconnected, and it still didn't do
nothing, so I guess I just put something else wrong when I rearranged all
the stuff in the case..

Thanks anyway /Ola J

PS. I'll report back when I get it all running.
