XP-WinMe-98 networking problem

K

KC

I've got 4 PCs sharing a net connection through a router.

Two PCs run WinMe, 1 runs XP, and one runs Win98.

The Win98 machine can see/access "Me#1" and the XP machine, but cannot
see/access Me#2.
The XP machine can see/access "Me#1" and the Win98 machine, but cannot
see/access Me#2.
"Me#1" machine can see/access the 98 machine, but cannot see/access Me#2 or
the XP machine.
"Me#2" says it cannot access the network but can see/access "Me#1" and the
Win98 machine, and cannot see/access the XP machine.

I'm at a loss.

What do I do now?

Thanks,
KC

KC,

Start with the XP machine. Does it have ICF or another firewall
product? If so, disable it and retest.

In order to share files on a Windows XP machine, the computer sharing
the files must be logged in with an account / password identical to an
account / password setup on the XP machine.

Please define "cannot access the network", "cannot see/access".

From each machine, run "ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt", and copy and
paste the contents of ipconfig.txt here.

Cheers,

Chuck

Can I throw in a response question here, as I have a similar problem (hope I
don't annoy KC!)

I don't have any user login on XP, I just click one of two users on the
first XP screen.
What login might be needed from the ME PC to access the XP PC in that
situation?

Nigel,

You are, unfortunately, annoying both of us. By putting your question
in the middle of another thread, you make confusion for:
1) The Original Poster (KC);
2) The Original Responder (me);
3) Anybody else who might be able to help the OP;
4) Anybody who might be able to help you (if you were to start a new
thread).

It's called thread hijacking. Please don't do it again.

To answer your question, anybody needing to access a share on a
Windows XP (NT / 2K) computer, from their computer, must login to
their computer using an account / password identical to one already
setup on the other computer.

In the Win 9x world, you startup your computer and are given the
chance to login (though many hit Esc when asked for a userid). When
you login, the account / password you provide is NOT used for anything
on that computer (everybody has access to everything under 9x), but it
IS saved for authentication when needed for accessing a share on a
secured computer (such as Win NT/2K/XP).

Cheers,

Chuck

This may be true for XP Pro but not neccesarily for XP Home. I was running
an XP-HE/Win98 network until recently and no logon was ever required to
access shares on the XP machine from the Win98 computer. Only two accounts
on the XP computer, both with administrator rights, Guest account disabled.
No logon on the Win98 computer. Specific folders and drives only were shared
on the XP host, with a mix of Read-only and R-W permissions. The Win98
machine connected to the internet transparently via ICS in the XP host. The
networked computers are currently both XP-HE, connected via a broadband
router. Still no logon required from either machine to access shares on the
other. The default user logon on each is different.
