Win98, Winxp, Router

Need some help here, in that it has happened to me more than once with
different machines, different router, but always the XP/98 combination.

I have a WinXP Home PC, a Win98 PC, and a Netgear router with a cable modem.
Both machines are in the same workgroup, both machines have internet
connectivity. There are two problems I encounter; 1) I can see the Win98
shared folders from the XP machine, but I cannot see the XP computer from
the 98 machine. 2) I guess due to #1, I cannot use the shared printer that
is connected locally to the XP machine.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure that a firewall program (Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin,
ZoneAlarm, etc) on the XP computer isn't blocking access.

If there's no firewall program, check XP's built-in firewall (Internet
Connection Firewall in RTM and SP1 versions, Windows Firewall in SP2
version).

Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the XP machine.

I have an older Win98 system, an XP Home system and a netgear router
with a dsl modem. I run ZoneAlarm (free) on both and Norton AV. The MS
builtin firewall is turned off since it's almost useless. I have three
folders set as shared on my XP as well as the printer which is
attached to the XP. I can see, read and write to the XP shared files
with no problems. My Win 98 has the entire C drive set to share so the
XP can "see" everything on it.

In Explorer I can see a listing for the XP system and when I expand
the that the only things I can see are the three shared files and the
printer.

Are you sure you have sharing "on" for the XP computer's folder you're
trying to see/use?
