Boot your computer with the Windows XP CDROM and choose the Repair
(Recovery Console) option.

When the Recovery Console has completed loading (it may take a few
minutes) and it has stopped at the command prompt enter the following
command:

CHKDSK /R

That should repair the problem in most instances. However if it does
not and the computer still will not boot then there may be a physical
problem with the hard drive itself, requiring some hands-on attention
from a hardware repair technician.

Note:
If your Windows XP is on an OEM supplied "System Recovery" disk it may
not give you the Repair (Recovery Console) option when you boot from
it. In that case you need to download the 6 diskette set of XP boot
diskettes from Microsoft as per the following article.

Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 310994
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994

Booting from these diskettes will also give you the Repair (Recovery
Console) option and you can then run the CHKDSK /R command.

Good luck
