XP vs 98 current thinking?

Jim Scott

What is the current thinking on Windows98 vs XP?
I moved from 98se to XP recently and have not noticed a big difference
except perhaps it's ability to reset itself instead of the BSOD.
I have to change computers again and it has been suggested that since I
use a lot of software/freeware/Firefox/tbird/etc, 98 works better. It
will be a clean install, whichever I choose.
Views please from those with experience of both.

I use XP, and could never go back to '98. There are just too many nice
features and sweet programs that won't run on 98.

It resets because there is an option ticked so it reboots instead of
BSOD, right click my computer and select properties.... somewhere near
the pagefile options you will find it. Might help you find out why its
crashing.

I installed 98SE onto an old Compaq Deskpro P200/128MB the other week
and was horrified at how unstable it was. This was a plain vanilla
install too. Hadn't even got round to tweaking it.

We've had this discussion before here, can't remember with who though,
adn the general concensus was that most found Win98se more stable than
XP. This has certainly NOT been my experience. I recommend all of my
customers move to XP when '98 problems get too numerous. If they have
the right hardware, they are far better off using XP that a continuous
re-install cycle imposed by '98.

Well you're still getting the BSOD its just that XP by default resets
when you get it so you dont have time to read the message or often not
even see the BSOD. That "reset" feature can be changed, of course.

That actually wasn't a win98SE problem. It is probably a driver or ram
problem.

Yeah, I think it was here. I think the thread started out as a freeware
compatability thing. Anyway, I'm just saying that I agree with the whole
XP is better than 9x thing. I do tend to ramble on at ......

You must be psychic, having no access to the machine or install in
question, and you can accuratly determine the cause of instability. If
you're ever looking for work, call me, I can always use a tech like you
on my staff. Most of my guys have to actually look at the machine, and
most of the time, even boot it up for themselves.
Sorry, but I'm having way too much fun with this one.

did two here, about a few months ago after upgrading my ram.

I do notice a difference here - now I really can leave my PC
overnight to make it do all types of update itself
automatically. In 98 there is no way to do it without
rebooting the next morning.

Depend on what freeware you use. Yet, none of my old 9x
programs stop working in xp. On the other hand, many xp
program cannot be run in 98. However, if you are a true dos
gamer - a few dos games could have broke in xp.
It
will be a clean install, whichever I choose.

IMO, not a hardcore gammer here. If you have very good
hardware and a fast comp, xp is a certain. :)

Personally I find XP (on friends and the gfs computer)very much slower
booting up even though they have 3ghz machines and i have a 733 p3 98se
machine.Rather than getting the occasional bsod they get a nicer microsoft
xp explanation of the fault but it basically amounts to the same thing..a
fault.I hate all the lsass.exe and svchosts potch , when trying to set up
firewall rules for them.I hate the windows messenger spam vulnerability you
get with xp.I even disagree that 98 is bound to crash and reinstalls are
common.I havent reinstalled for well over a year , and the crash was due to
my own mistake where i accidentally set cyberscrub to delete my c drive
rather tna the contents of my recycle bin.I also hate how xp gives you
warning after warning .."do you really want to look in the windows
folder"?..this could be dangerous sorta thing..now that really bugs me.As
you can tell i personally think xp is a load of old tosh and is only good
for getting rid of the resources issue that plagues old systems. However with
good sense and managment even that is nt much of a problem. In my experience
its usually bad operators that crash w98 and not the system in itself being
unstable.

Compaqs from the early 90's were built using hardware that was on
Windows 95 or Windows 98 HCL as they were marketed primarily at the
corporate sector so reliability had to be assured. THey were also
bombproof. It wasn't a RAM issue.

98SE, without a doubt. I only have XP because I have to (to test my
software) and I hate it.

I can't say I can foresee the future, but I would choose XP just because
it is less likely to get outdated in the near future. That means less
maintenance cause you don't have to switch later on. XP, however, is a
maintenance nightmare if you want it to run the way you want it to run,
rather than the way Micro$oft wants it to run. See here:

Not necessarily; If you've got the right tools (freeware of course) and / or
ask the right questions, XP by far surpasses 98 in this area (esp. with
what's already built in - you just have to learn how to access it and use
it)
