XP VPN disconnects after 2.5 minutes

My client has a laptop with XP pro sp1 and has a VPN icon set up to
connect to another office.
After 2.5 minutes the VPN hangs up each time pretty much on the dot.
There is another PC in his office with win2kpro that can connect with no
problems.
Also other branches stay connected with no problems.

ICS is disabled and 802.1x authentication is disabled.
Have obtained and loaded the patch referred to in MS article 331816 with no
change.
What else could cause it?

Does the events at the VPN server and client give any useful information on
the problem?

You said that the VPN connection hangs, does it not give any error to the
user? Also is there any idle timeout set on the laptop?

I don't think so but I can't recall if I checked.

It hangs up and a box pops up asking to redial.
The idle timeout is not set.

It hangs up and a box pops up asking to redial.
The idle timeout is not set.
Does this mean the VPN client doesn't get any errors just a dialog box pops
up askign to redial? Do you have access to the VPN Server, the event logs in
the serve rin this scenario would be helpful?

Sharoon,

I am also have this issue and judging by recent posts, so do are other
people.

No the connection just drops, no redial.
If you continuously ping a computer on the internal network, it starts
timing out. The shortly after that
the connection just drops.

We can analyse the problem better if we can get the following information

- Which router are you using?
- Can you give PPP.log for analysing the packets?
- Could you trace the packets using tools like Network Monitor?
- Any events in the events log which sounds suspicious?

I have fixed the problem.
I updated the firmware on the Netgear FR328s router and it stays connected
now.

Apparently even though there is no VPN function on the router, it has what
is known as a VPN pass through port, and old firmware can interfere with the
windows connection process somehow. Don't ask me how.

To answer your questions above, there were no error msgs upon disconnect and
the only event log entries on either end were user or device has
disconnected or words to that effect.

In my Case I by-passed the ISA Server and plugged straight into My Router
(SnapGear) and
had no problems.

Every signle Neatgear ADSL Router I have installed recently has required a
firmware upgrade
just to get Port Forwarding, working properly with VPN Inbound.

Buts thats not the issue here. I with get you the require info.

I'm having this problem too.
Did some investigations, and I found out it's related to ICF. It onl
happens when the interface through which the VPN connection goes out i
protected with ICF (Internet Connection Firewall), which is a built-i
Firewalling feature of Windows XP.

Please note, it happens when ICF is enabled for the OUTGOING INTERFAC
(i.e. the ethernet interface) and not the VPN connection itself.

Found no related KB articles to confirm this. Can anyone pleas
confirm?

Thanks in advance,

Oren Chapo
