XP upgrade issues

I recently had my old computer system go down and had to
reformat my hard drive. After checking the hard drive
with diagnostic program to search for errors, I
reformatted and then started loading Win 98se using Quick
Restore supplied by Compaq with the original system. I
admit I had many problems getting this to finally load.
During the unzip process, the computer would just seem to
hang up with the same info looping.
After succedding in getting 98 loaded I then procedded to
upgrade to XP, which I have done in the past. I am 2/3
way through the upgrade and am getting a diagnostic that
that windows is shutting down to protect the computer.
The issue seems to be in the area of memory management.
My twofold problem is this.
First, I cannot seem to quit the upgrade process at this
time. I have tried everything but there does not seem to
be an option to quit. Cannot open in safe mode or escape
so that I caN BRING IT BACK TO wIN 98 to run a system
dianostic.
Second, what would be the best guess for the memory
management problem? The mmu on the mother board?
Processor?
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated

Test your memory with a utility like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com.
Make a bootable floppy or cd with the precompiled Windows binary and
boot your machine from it. Memtest86 will start running immediately.
Let the test run for a long time, unless you get errors immediately. If
you get errors, replace the RAM. Make sure you use the correct RAM for
your motherboard. If the RAM is good, then the issue is probably with
the motherboard. You can try testing it yourself, or take the machine
to a good local computer shop.
