My XP update won't install because it isn't detecting my
current OS (ME). I do have a seperate linux OS but its
installed on another HD. It refuses to install even when
the extra drive is removed. i keep getting a request to
insert a windows disk (whether it be a 98, ME, or XP) and
all i have are the original fdisks for my desktop and
laptop. does ME have to be fully upgraded for it to be
detected? i recently had to restore the system like 3
times during the past 2 weeks which is why i opted for XP
because i was sick and tired of having to debug my ME.

Andy,
Can you read your original post and let us know what your problem was?
Out of good faith I am dismissing this as troll post?
Why would XP update detect Me? If you could even access XP update from Me
anyway. Did you mean upgrade instead of update?
What are the original fdisks? FDISK is a dos partitioning utility that is
usually included on a Windows 9x/Me boot disk[ aka startup disk].
Is it possible your problem is related to you having a OEM XP Home or Pro
CD? With the OEM XP CD, you can only install XP to a clean hard drive or
partition.

I suspect you are trying to install it after booting the XP CD; and that
the ME disks you have are some OEM 'restore' or 'recovery' set.

Instead, boot the ME and run the XP CD from it. Take install and then
either continue with Upgrade (which I would do in the first instance if
you have not yet formatted the drive), or, if you had to restore the ME,
start over clean by switching the Upgrade to New Install. In that case,
when it asks to confirm where, hit ESC, select and delete the existing
partition, and make a new RAW one which will be formatted at the next
stage. By that time the eligibility check will have been done

BTW if you installed Linux lilo or grub in the master boot record of
the disk, you will have to restore it and set the dual boot up again
