here are the particulars of my problem in response to an
email i received. i bought xp update a day or two ago and
tried to rplace ME with XP. after inserting the disk and
starting my computer i let my system read the disk first
before it started windows. when i said update i meant
upgrade. i never let my computer boot windows ME when
trying to install XP. now midway while installing XP it
says that it does not detect windows ME or 98 and requests
that i insert a windows 98,ME, or XP disk. I originally
bought my computer put together with the OS already
installed. yes, i know what a is fdisk, as far as i'm
concerned i call them startup disks fdisks (same thing),
and i meant what i said in my earlier post. the closest
thing i had to a windows disk were the fdisks (startup
disks) supplied to me by the company that manufactured the
computer (knowing that they were not REAL windows disks
they were the closest thing i had). since i had bought the
computer, i had overhauled it installing a new
motherboard, video card, two new cd roms (one is a cd-rw),
and most recently a new HD. the initial upgrades posed
little problem for about 1 year. after installing the HD
i've had to restore my computer 3 times within the past 2
weeks. the first time i had installed it after inspection
i discovered that it was installed improperly (jumpers).
after replacing them i restored the system and reinstalled
the HD. it went fine for about 2 days before ME refused to
boot upon startup and had to be restored again (same
reason why it had to berestored earlier). after another day
(and another restore) it refused to start again so i have
opted for windows XP. normally i would blame a faulty HD
or installation thereof but seeing as how performance had
improved after the second try (slightly) and having double
checked the connections i refuse to beleive it. on the
second HD i have installed linux but i don't think that
the problem stems from this seeing as how i had unplugged
it after trying to install it (it being XP) for the first
time. as far as why XP upgrade would detect ME (email
reply from admin) it syas so printed on the box, and no i
did not purchas the OEM XP home or pro version (isn't that
the full version) i do not have the full versions merely
the upgrade for previous versions of windows (98, ME)
which the program refuses to detect. is this a problem
with the disk? does windows have to be registered? after
the third restore i never got a round to registering it.

When you do a clean install upgrade by booting from the XP CD, the
installation procedure will ask for evidence that you are eligible for the
upgrade, by asking for the win98 or Me installation CD. If you don't have
this you need to boot Me as normal then insert the XP CD and let it
autostart, then carry out the upgrade procedure from there.
The second option will leave some Me debris on your HD and some will say
it's not the best way to carry out the upgrade but I don't think you have an
option.

I thought as much. unfortunately i'm ususally pretty busy
at college and haven't tried activating it from within in
windows. traditionally when you do something as touchy as
this you let the system boot off of the disk provided.
i'll give it a try (when i get home) and reply later if it
didn't work.

I take it you mean a 'clean install with an Upgrade CD'.

You can achieve this from the previous system by running the CD from
that, changing the Upgrade to New install, and when it asks for
confirmation where, hit ESC, delete the existing partition and make a
new RAW one which will be formatted at the next stage. By that time the
eligibility check has been made
