XP Updates Hang PC

When I do a normal shutdown of my PC with Xp Pro and SP2, I get a message
that new updates need to be loaded. Once this process launches it runs
indefinitely until I manually power down the PC. the next time I log on then
power down, the same thing happens, unless I click on the link" shutdown
without loading updates".

Any suggestions as to how to eliminate this issue?

I suspect you are not giving the automatic update feature sufficient time to
complete the update. Before shutting down look in the system tray on the
bottom right of the screen. You should see a tiny icon that tells you there
is an update available. If you click on it you will be able to custom
install the updates and watch them get installed. Remember though that they
need to be downloaded. If you have ADSL its only a minute or two, but dial
up means leaving the download to complete over more time. If you prefer turn
Auto Update off from the security applet in Control Panel, but remember to
check the Windows Update site frequently.

I do have ADSL and i have left the updates to run overnight, only to find
that it still dsiplays the message "installing 1 of 2" in the morning. When
I manually power down the PC, it reboots normally, but the updates icon is
always in the system tray.

Hello,
What happens if you switch off automatic update? Then try deleting all temp
files and reboot the system. Finally switch auto update back on again.

Hi Chelsea,
I did what you suggested. After I rebooted and turned on auto update,
message said it was looking for updates, found 2 and then asked if I wanted
to load them. I clicked yes, it went through the upload process, said it was
finished, and then a few seconds later, the system tray icon reappeared
saying it had found 2 updates and did I want to load them. If I cancel the
upload and try to shut down the computer, I am right back where I started, it
tells me to click turn off to install important updates, and then it seems to
hang appearing to load updates, but indefinitely.
I have Black Ice firewall loaded on the PC. Could this have any affect on
this problem?

I don't know anything about that firewall MC so can't comment. What you
could try is manually going to the Windows update site and installing all
the updates available, this might flush any corrupt or buffered files out of
your system. If you don't have ADSL and you do not want to be online
forever, just opt to select the security updates. for download. Lets see if
that helps.

Hi Chelsea,
Tried what you suggested, and the results are the same. Icon still in sys
tray and system still warns of updates needed to be made when I want to shut
down. Any suggestions?
