System startup hangs two times out of every three

My pc (Win XP Pro 2002 SP2) has started a pattern of behaviour at power-up
where, two times in every three, it hangs before loading the desktop. I have
to manually power down, switch on again, and the same happens. However,
third time is always lucky - it goes through to load the desktop and complete
the power-up sequence correctly. This exact pattern has been repeated for
about three weeks now. Any ideas?

Hi, Guy..
Not a one, cause I'm having a similar problem for about the last 3-4 days.
This one does load the desktop and the icons finally get dressed, but the
taskbar icons do not all load, the clock is hung, and the mouse pointer will
move but that's all - can't click it to close, open, etc.. Only recourse is
to turn off monitor and then hold the start button on the tower for several
seconds til it shuts down, wait a few more seconds and then start all over.
Sometimes the first start up works just like normal, sometimes second try
works fine but this a.m., had to go for 3rd. Have you found any
solutions/reasons ? Sorry for no help.... Hope someone can make some
suggestions for us.

Hi bobnrobin, I'm still seeing this behaviour pattern. I did just leave it
on one occasion when it was hung, and after a long time (5-10 minuutes) the
desktop finally appeared (no icons, no nothing, just the backdrop picture),
then after a further 5-10 minutes the desktop icons appeared, then the
start-up icons etc.... and all was well; the system performed as normal.
Whilst frozen, I hit ctrl-alt-del to bring up the system monitor, but it was
running at 0% - absolutely nothing was happening.
