XP update and hardware clashes

Good afternoon. I shall try to be as precise as I can about this. On April
14th of this month I installed the critical patches recommended by Microsoft
on April 12th, including patches for Explorer, Windows XP, Outlook and
Exchange. The following day, I ran into several conflicts. First, my CD-RW
combo burner, a Lite-On SOHO 5232K NK0A, began to work erradically, mainly
clashing with several games that previously worked without any problems
before the patches. The problem with the CD RW is that two games, Prince of
Persia and URU, upon exiting the games would cause the entire system to shut
down and reboot by itself. Neither game had done that before the patch, and
now it happens every time after the patch was included. Also, programs have
become increasingly slow. Norton System works usually took two to three
minutes to do a WinDoctor check, now it takes 30 minutes. The antivirus
check was 30 minutes to do, now it takes more than two hours. I have two web
browsers, Mozilla and Explorer, and they both worked just fine till after the
patch, in which the Mozilla bookmarks were all wiped out (surprise, surprise)
and the web browers now loads slowly, if that. Also, I dont' have any save
points in the System Restore, since the few I had created are now gone. I am
convinced that the patches are conflicting with my current hardward and
programs, so I am asking if anyone knows how I can reset your my system back
to before the patches of April 12th, 2005. Or am I going to have to reload
the XP platform again?

You will not have to reload XP.
You will have to manually remove the patches one by one until things become
normal again, rebooting with the removal of each patch.
Then get only the patches you need, based on their description.
Non-critical patches should not be installed automatically.

Dear T. Waters,
May I ask how one would go through that process? Is there page perhaps that
delinates the process?

Sorry I missed your post yesterday.
Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs
The MS Updates are at the bottom of the list, after the empty space.
Remove the updates with the date of the last batch (4/14?)
I do not have these updates, and read that they were issued without dates?!
If so, I also read that they were 16 in number, so remove the last 16. I
would remove them 4 at a time, booting after each batch and testing whether
your computer is behaving normally again.
PS: Write down the number of each update you remove.

I am having the same problem. I tried doing this (removing the updates) and it didn't fix the problems. I've also spent two evenings on the phone with microsoft and I still have problems and can't open system restore. Has anyone found any other solutions to this? Other than starting all over and reinstalling XP?

P.S. I had no problems with SP2 - just with this latest batch of "fixes".
