XP unplugged Linksys BEFSW4

I see similar problems but none quite like mine. I can plug in a 6
month old emachine running XP Home directly into the comcast modem and
access the internet just fine. If I take that same cable out of the
modem and plug it into the Linksys, xp says "cable unplugged" I cannot
even get into the Linksys utility because XP doesn't see it. I am
helping a friend so this is not my machine, I am told all worked fine
until about 2 weeks ago. The owner has since performed a complete
restore of the PC, reset the linksys, returned and replaced the
linksys, and still the problem persists. One note: when pluging in
"any" port on the router, only faint intermittant flashes on the
corresponding LED on the front are detected. I have also swapped
cables, modem to router/ router to PC same effect. reading the posts,
i see I have not yet power cycled the modem or released the ip config.
I'll try that this weekend and maybe reseat the NIC.
Anyone had this problem?? Any suggestions are greatly appreceiated

Check the cable..... normally when connecting direct to a cable modem, one
uses a crossover cable. When connecting to a router, one uses a Cat5 cable.
If your cable has the words 'crossover' written on it, you're using the
wrong cable.

I am having the same problem. A week ago my XP Pro
networked machine (on Comcast service)using a linksys
cable modem into a linkysys cable router lost the
connection to the router with "cable unpluged" message on
PC. I replaced the NIC card in PC, No change. Worked
with Linksys to run diagnostics, they determine it's
defective equipment. Replaced cable router, same problem
exists. (maybe the router wasn't bad after all). I have
tried different cables, no change. Earlier in the week, I
could run the cable from the PC directly into cable modem
and make the connection, but now that does not work.

I have been running the network setup for over a year
without a problem. Is this a software issue with the OS?
I have been very diligent with installing the security
patches. Is there some link here? I also tried to run
ipconfig/renew, but since the PC thinks that the network
cable is unplugged it can't renew. Also tried the repair
function in the network setup but that fails as well.

Lastly I worked with my ISP to confirm that all of my
settings in my TCP/IP properties were correct. Where do I
go from here???

I have a similar problem except I am connected to a
Linksys wireless bridge via cat5 to my on board ethernet.
I have installed XP on a second hard drive, with 98SE on
the first I am able to boot up and connect via the Linksys
bridge no problem, internet no problem, however when I
boot up in Windows XP I get the "cable unplugged" message.
My device drivers are the latest and state "functioning
properly". I can even see the LAN light up on both the
back of the computer where the cat5 plugs in and on the
Linksys bridge which is an indication that the devices are
communicating. So, I have come to the conclusion that it
has to be an issue in the OS. Possibly a device driver
incompatibility that doesn't know it's incompatible. I
will keep you posted on my future research. Hope you do
the same.
