XP Unable to stop pop adds

Frank

I've tryed downloading this free edition pop up
stopper. and it does work, but not with all of them. I
just get these other pop ups, that say "stop pop ups
now!" and all it does is make me more angry. I've tryed
the add but its not free. It's ruining my online gaming,
It'll minimize my game while I'm in the middle of battle
to show me the pop up. Please help, Thanks
Frank B.

Virtually anyone who offers you a pop-up stopper is only
blocking others and paving the way for their own. So your
sense is correct on this.

I agree with Jupiter that the ads are just a symptom of the
problem and that disabling the messenger service is one
step toward cutting down the number of pop-ups you're
getting. Ad-Aware, while it is one of the few legitimate
pop-up removers, is only removing the symptoms. The problem
really lies within an application (or several applications)
that is running on your system unbeknownst to you that is
reaching out (if you will) and calling these pop-up ads.
So, no matter how much you run Ad-Aware, the problem will
return.

Where I disagree with Jupiter (no offence intended) is at
the bottom of his post where he points out other
sites/products to use to stop pop-ups (after his mention of
Ad-Aware and lavasoft). Avoid them. They will only give you
more pop-ups in the manner I described above. Whenever I
have removed Panicware and Popupbuster (and a few others)
from a users machine and registry run group (careful!), the
pop-ups went away. That was because these products act as
requesters and are being started automatically each time
you restart your machine. Since I don't know your technical
comfort level, I won't delve into the registry details
because it is dangerous unless you understand it. If you
are comfortable with the registry, goto
HKLM....windows/currentversion/run and remove references to
panicware and some of the other things that Jupiter listed
after his mention of Ad-aware. If you find those same names
(that Jupiter pointed out) within your add/remove programs,
go ahead and remove them and their directories from within
your Program Files directory structure. Odds are, those are
the culprits. Ad-aware is fine, but only solves the
symptoms, and as Jupiter points out, there's an underlying
problem that needs to be solved.

**BIG DISCLAIMER HERE: If any of what I said does not make
sense, don't do any of it. Run this by a local tech support
person or equivalent so they can advise you on the process
(if necessary).

I always wanted PopUpBuster to start when the computer boots. How can I do
that?

Frankly, I just provoked Shadowhawk. I am using PopUpBuster. To start it at
boot-up you have to create manually a shortcut in the Start
Menu\Programs\Startup or you need to edit the registry. (BTW the customer
service discourages this, because "you need this program only when you are
on the internet")

He gave you false advice and here is the truth:

1. "Virtually anyone who offers you a pop-up stopper is only blocking others
and paving the way for their own"
Millions are using popup killing programs for years. Most of the popup
killing programs are effective against popups. The two he mentioned in his
post are automatic and very aggressive. They rather block a suspicios script
link (which can be overridden by pressing shift or ctrl keys) than let the
popup slip through.
2. "They will only give you more pop-ups"
I've been using PopUpBuster for years. It automatically stops all popups. I
haven't had any problem with popups ever since having this program. I am
using PopUpBuster because it does not alter the operating system. They have
a so called "no install" feature. My second choice would be Popup Stopper.
3. "Whenever I have removed Panicware and Popupbuster (and a few others)
from a users machine and registry run group (careful!), the pop-ups went
away." ... "these products act as requesters and are being started
automatically each time you restart your machine"
This is a straight lie. PopUpBuster never started at boot-up. According to
their customer support: "We discourage everybody to start popup killer
programs at boot-up. You need these program only when you are on the
internet"
4. "Ad-aware is fine, but only solves the symptoms"
Ad-Aware _solves_ the problem by detecting and removing spyware.

Do not be scared by Shadowhawk's post. Both PopUpBuster and Popup Stopper
are good programs to stop popups.
