XP Taskbar missing, repair failed!

I installed IE 7 on a laptop running XP Media Center. After rebooting
I have no taskbar or icons, just a blank screen with my desktop image.
I can run programs (though not explorer or IE) through File->New Task
in Task Manager. Repairing Windows with the CD and recovery console
did not fix the problem.

Any ideas about what the problem might be? Many Thanks.

1. This may be the definite solution: Read the Registry solution in the
techguy forum, (3rd before last answer) and run the regedit program from the
taskmanager to find and delete the Explorer.exe keys which may be corrupted.

Just in case the registry edition doesn't work, you may want to try these.

2. You can also use the Last Known Good safe mode option, the System Restore
either in normal or the safe mode option tp get back to when Windows
Explorer was loading normally. To bring up the Safe Mode Options, restart
the computer and press F8 about three times right after the HD starts to
run.

3. Try the new task in the taskmanager and type; Explorer.exe... The
desktop is part of Explorer.exe as is the start menu and the control panel,
so you have to make Explorer stay "ON" to have a normal logon.
Access the WINDOWS folder through the Explorer after
starting it from the taskmanager and find Explorer.exe (in
C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe) and right click on the Explorer.exe file
and select "create a shortcut", then copy or cut the shortcut and drop it in
C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Start Menu\Programs\Start... this will
make the Desktop and Windows Explorer start as you logon.
