As I posted in a note a while back, I have not yet solved the system
sound problem on 2 of my 4 XP Pro machines.
It is a remote possibility that this happened on both after a Windows
update session. Not sure.

For the record, all the rest of the audio on both systems work really
well..only the system sounds are out.

I have tried all of Kelly's tips and while she has bailed me out
countless times in the past, nothing related helped this time.
I even went through the SFC on both PCs...again no help. I have tried
all the MS suggestions on their sites, still nothing.

I'm not sure that if I do a repair re-install that it would help. Saving
this for last as when I go to update after, the same think might occur
again, if indeed this repairs the problem.

Both machines have Realtek AC-97, and of course, I have loaded and
reloaded and updated the drivers to the point of no return.
I have tried each and every tip found in the Google world, to no avail.

Is it possible that someone might know the file or files that control
this function and I could copy them from another working machine? In
scouting for a solution, I see that a number of people have this same
problem but I don't see a solution.

Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks in advance....

from your description, I don't know exactly what your problem is, but
here's a thought: do you have TweakUI? If so, check the GENERAL branch,
the "Beep on Errors" check box should be checked. If not, _ALL_ system
sounds are disabled.

Thanks for your reply..

I had previously determined that this was checked, however, I went into
my BIOS settings and saw that the beep on errors was not enabled. I
rebooted thinking I got but no luck. Back to square one..
Thanks again..
