XP system tools Back up function

I have a “Maxtor OneTouch 4†500 GB external hard drive connected to my
desktop with Windows XP Professional 2002 Service pack2; Microsoft Office
2002 XP. It has worked well for 1.5 yrs.

When I try to open the external drive in explorer I get the message: I:\ is
not accessible: THE FILE OR DIRECTORY IS CURRUPTED AND UNREADABLE
This occurred immediately after using the windows system tools backup
function to back up my desktop computer to the I:\

I would appreciate any thoughts on how to resolve this issue?

I have tried the following tests and none have corrected the problem:
I have removed the drive, rebooted, and reconnected;
I have turned off all firewalls to check if they were interfering;
I have plugged the drive into another computer got the same message thus the
External drive’s data cable seems to be working since both computers
recognized the device and assigned a temporary drive for it.

FWIW, I had the same experience but with a Western Digital drive. The
USB/Firewire part was fine, but the drive itself would spin up when
power was applied but then spin down, never to spin again until a
remvoe/reapply of power.
I removed the drive and put it in the PC; same symptoms: the drive
itself was belly up. Note: This WD drive was NOT directly compatible
with the normal power connectors; had to fiddle to get it to plug in.
FWIW.

Have you tried a different USB or Firewire connector?
chkdsk?
fixmbr? Only if it's not getting a drive letter assigned.
Are you using the One Touch software? If so, try it and see what
happens. I already had Ghost, so I only installed it momentarily on
mine. It does have a diagnostic in it though. Try running that.

Download the drive's test progs from the mfr. Don't be surprised if it
turns out to be a Seagate drive - they bought Seagate but I forget how
long ago. Run their disk daigs; it might point something out or verify
the disk is gone.

Actually Seagate aquired Maxtor, but it could be a seagate but I would
suspect it's Maxtor as the package is a "consumer item"

Another fallacy, the home.
Its primary purpose WAS to provide shelter, and allow the dweller to proceed
a life within it by their own choices. The first a need, the second a
right.
Somewhere along the way, its become primary purpose as a financial security
instead.
