XP Home & back up...

Mike

I have an XP home computer that I've commected an external USB drive to for
back up.
I've selected the C drive & system state for backup, to run every night at 1
AM, but nothing is backing up.
Any ideas why?

Too little info.
What backup program? State of computer at 1 AM? Standby? On? Hibernate?
Using 'wake on Lan'?
Back up to what? Etc.

Yes, computer is on & set to stay on, no hibernate, turn off, etc.
Using the backup utility that comes with XP Home & trying to back up to
external USB drive (My Book).

This is often caused by not having a password on the user account.

By default, for security reasons, the Task Scheduler will not run scheduled
tasks on an account with no password. You can defeat this, but it's a much
better idea to add a password to the account, and then set the system to not
ask for the password (use "control userpasswords2" at a command prompt, or
use TweakUI).

Also, be aware that some features of ntbackup, such as ASR, are not
available on XP Home. They are there and selectable in the UI, but you
won't find out that they don't work till the process starts and fails.
