xp style overtaken by classic style

Just upgraded to XP on a win 98 machine. I want to use
the win XP style under the appearance settings. When I
choose this it seems to work fine- for 5 or 10 minutes.
Then XP comes up with a "please wait" sign and
automatically switches the appearance back to classic
style. Anyone have this same problem or know how to
correct it??? Thanx.
