XP SP3 Home freezes at Welcome screen once.

A friend has Win XP SP3 Home. Machine is almost brand new [under 4 months
old]. There is only one user account.

Out of the blue, when my friend booted up, it got stuck at the "Welcome"
screen [the one with the "Welcome" word at the center of the screen]. And it
sat there for about 25-30 minutes until I arrived.

Had to do a hard shutdown [hold the pwer button down]. Rebooted and
everything was fine. No flags in the event log or anything.

Is this an Intel-based PC with Intel chipsets? Have you installed the
current Intel chipset drivers?

Could be many things. If currently running fine, don't worry about it. If
failure recurs run memory diagnostics and
any other tests available to you. Be sure computer has a good ground
connection..

Everything working fine otherwise. No flags anywhere.

It replaced an old clunker. At worse, maybe a decent powerbar is needed.

Have you made sure that things like chipset drivers and BIOS are all
current with what is offered on the Dell support web site? These are
the most common pieces of software that are overlooked by everyone.
