SP3 "resume from hibernation" problem

RJK

A couple of days ago my 2nd PC, after "resume from hibernation" just sat at
the black screen - the one with "Press F8 to delete restoration data",
(after the long progress bar had travelled from left to right at the bottom
of the screen), and I had to hold the power button in and force it to switch
off.
Same thing now on my main PC today !

....so it looks to me like hibernation is now, no longer working properly
after SP3 :) ...or should that be :-(

....I wonder if there'll be a patch soon, to fix what was not broken, and got
broken with SP3 ?

regards, Richard

XP Home ed. on both PC's (legit licenses on both btw)
1st PC Asrock Conroe 865PE/D935/1gb
2nd PC Asrock Nforce4/AM2 3800/1gb)

mmm, I imaged hd's (d/m/y) 1/5/08 before applying SP3, and 7/5/08 after SP3
....I wonder what else is "wrong" in SP3, ... tempted to drop back to the
1st - dumping SP3 ?

Right, - that's it ! SP3 is coming out on my AMD single core, and Intel twin
core PC's,
....all will no longer resume from hibernation. I only use it Resume form
hibernation once in a while during the day, and use full shut-down at end of
day but, it makes one wonder what other disasters are included and waiting
to surface in SP3 !?

After uninstalling SP3 from my XP Home nforce4/AMD3800 single core, and
rebooting it, it sat there for a few minutes while I was working on my main
Intel PC and then, without being touched - AMD machine hibernated all by
itself ! ...nothing was changed or set in AMD's screen saver | power saving
settings ...which were set not to do anything for about half an hour. What
a mess !

I've seen talk about fiddling with S1 and S3 settings, and "make sure that
ACPI is set ver. 3.0 in BIOS," etv.
I don't want to gain DEGREE class knowledge in ACPI power settings, I just
want security updates via Windows updates to go in without CREATING PROBLEMS
!!!!!!
.....not happy with MS now !!

For future reference, the idea is to shun MS's updates for some period
after release. The more major the update and the more "improvements" they
claim the longer you need to avoid it. A service pack probably needs at
least a month to fester in public before you even think about trying it.
MS's alpha and beta testing, even if you assume good intentions on their
part, have a long track record of missing relatively major problems.

....well, for me at least.
After reading through:-
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2934953&SiteID=17
....and all the talk about PSU's and ACPI versions ...

I took a peek into my main PC's bios ACPI screen and enabled STR (suspend to
RAM) function | rebooted | hibernated | hit [Esc] | ..hey Presto ! no "hang"
after the big "resume form hibernation" progress bar completes. ...(that's
my Intel PC).

....same on the PC to my left (AMD), enabled STR in ACPI bios screen | that
one also now does not hang on "resume from hibernation."

I'd always guessed that the STR (suspend to RAM) was something to do with
bios based power saving settings, and that this bios option was nothing to
do with Windows hibernation. Considering that hibernation always previously
worked in my PC's with STR bios option disabled on all of them, I'm not sure
what it's all about - ...and I don't feel up to wading through ACPI spec's !

....So ! was SP3 to blame, has something to do with ACPI in SP3 changed ?
....or was corrected ? ...or improved ?

....anyhooo, enabling "STR" bios option did it for me :)
