XP SP3 and VPN

I am trying to trouble shoot a problem that has come up recently. I have a
Win 2000 server configured for remote access on my home LAN. The server has
two LAN connections configured (using standard documentation provided via
help). I have a Linksys cable/dsl router connected to my cable modem. I
have configured port forwarding to the one IP address I selected for the
Internet on the VPN server. I was able to access my home system when working
at various client sites using both file mapping to get data files and remote
desktop to view my home PCs on the LAN.

However, now I cannot get mapping or RDP to work. I can connet to the VPN
server from an external source, but I cannot access any of my PCs or servers.
I have seen a lot of posts about VPN and XP SP3, but I have not see any
information that suggests how to solve the problem.

Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation and if so, what can
be done.

Thanks,

Jim

- Did this problem become apparent at the same time as you installed SP3?
- Did you change anything else at the same time?
- Does the server have a firewall installed? Which one?
- What are the IP internal addresses of the external PC and the server?
- Can you ping your server by its internal IP address after establishing a
VPN connection?

Jim - I'm not sure as I don't use the VPN all that much. I have two laptops
that were configured to connect to my VPN server when I traveled, both were
upgraded to SP3 when it was pushed out via MS update.
- Did you change anything else at the same time?

Jim - again, not sure, but I shut the VPN server down for a while to use its
network cards in another computer. After I was finished with my test I
reinstalled the cards into the VPN server and brought it back on line. It
was afterwards that I noticed the VPN connections not working correctly.
Again, I can make the VPN connection to the server, but cannot do anything on
my internal network.
- Does the server have a firewall installed? Which one?

Jim - no firewall, just the Linksys router
- What are the IP internal addresses of the external PC and the server?

Jim - External I use 192.168.2.145, on Internal I use 192.168.2.146
I forward ports on the router to 192.168.2.145. On my laptops I extablish
connections to the IP of my router.
- Can you ping your server by its internal IP address after establishing a
VPN connection?

Jim - Yes, I believe I can ping as I tried that in some test, but I will
verify that again, but I cannot ping other addresses on the LAN

Thanks,

Jim

Your external PC uses the same subnet address as your server. You must use a
different subnet on the external PC, e.g. 192.168.3.

Jim - Currently my Linsys is configured as a gateway, so if I change to a
different subnet would I need to configure the Linksys as a router?

My area of confusion on this is that the configuration I am using worked.
The help sheet of MS advised using an external Internet, or an internal, but
did not specify a differnt subnet.

I'll try to test out this option tomorrow.

Thanks,

Jim

I think I misunderstood and answered wrong earlier.

I have to following configuraitons:

on my VPN servers I have two network cards, external (192.168.2.145) and
internal (192.168.2.146). I have a Linksys router that is configure with
192.168.2.1 as the IP and I use this as the gateway and DHCP. I use a mask
of 255.255.255.0 on the Linksys so all address from .1 to .255 are reachable.
The WAN interface on the Linksys is supplied by my ISP (currently
65.27.247.241).

When I try to VPN in I am connect to another network and my VPN client is
configured to use the IP from the ISP.

I can connect to the VPN server without problems. I can ping both the .145
and .146 interfaces on the VPN server. I can ping the .1 on the gateway.
But that is all I can do anymore. I used to be able to connect to my file
server .147, or run a RDP session to my home XP Pro system to get my mail.

I am unsure what has happen that has caused me to not be able to perform the
above tasks. I have rebuilt one laptop to XP Pro with SP2, but I cannot
connect with it, so I'm thinking the issue is nothing to do with SP3.

Any help or advice is appreciated.
Thanks,

Jim
