VPN's and Mapped drives

Hello.

I am experiencing a very odd issue where mapped drives to a member server
will not work over a VPN unless the logon script that maps these drives
include the full computer name. Example on the network, a login script will
map R:\ to \\server\remote while connected to the LAN. THis works great with
no issues while on the LAN but away from the LAN and connected via VPN over
a modem, the mapped drive is not available or will not contain any items in
a browser. If I change the drive mapping to
\\server.domain-name.local\remote the mapping will work over the VPN. I have
confirmed that both DNS and WINS are configured on the client and seem to
resolve just fine. Pinging \\server from the client while on the VPN will
also resolve the server name.

Clients ar Windows XP with all the latest updates and patches.
Servers are all Windows 2000 "" "" "" ""

Am I simply missing something in the DNS configuration or is this a bug with
mappings to member servers over a VPN?

Other mappings to ADC's using only the servers name will work just fine.

Thanks in advance!

Update!!!

I have been able to replicate this on a different laptop! This only seems
to occur if the remote user has an offline folder configured! In this
scenario, the remote user has the home directory marked as available while
offline. So.. This appears to be an issue with having offline folders and
VPN. Off to the KB's for a new search!
