XP SP2 WONT UPDATE

I've not used the system for around 6 months and all seems well except
the update operation. Upon requesting the update there is checking
what is needed with lots of uploadind as indicated by the modem
lights. It requests registration which I check ok, does more loading
after I depress "custom" install. Then it repeats over and over the
above routine with no errors indicated. Any KISS suggestions? I even
set up auto update, the time came and went with nothing happening.

Help, I need ideas! I even loaded a image from last Feb. and the
result is the same.
