I was unable to run the SP2 .exe that I had downloaded (I believe it may
have been corrupt). So I went to Windows Update to upgrade to SP2 the
regular way. The primary status window ("Installing Updates") indicated
that the download was successful but the installation seemed to stall at
about 3/4 through. There was a secondary window ("Windows XP Service
Pack 2 Setup Wizard") that also was stalled at 3/4 through the
"Finsishing Installation" process. Also in the window was "Performing
Cleanup." It was stuck there for over 20 minutes, and the the Back,
Finish, and Cancel buttons were all greyed out. I had to force quit
using Task Manager.
On the Windows Update site, I noted an error code of 0x87FF0004. I also
noted the following at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885626
This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
Your computer uses an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor that
is based on Prescott C-0 processor stepping.
Your computer has a BIOS version that is out of specification.
Note: A BIOS version that is out of specification does not provide
support for the processor that is installed on your computer.
Resolution was either obtaining an updated BIOS version or installing
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB885626).
FWIW, this PC has a 2.65 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor. I don't know
whether or not it is "based on Prescott C-0 processor stepping." How do
I find out? And would you believe this PC doesn't even have a floppy
drive?! I mention this because when I went to the Dell site to see what
I could do to upgrade the BIOS, it appears I need a floppy!
Also what's weird is that the Windows Update indicated (after I
rebooted) that SP2 *was* installed. However, although the SP update
(KB811113) is listed on my Belarc Advisor report, there's no green check
next to it to indicate that "the hotfix verifies correctly."
So can anyone let me know what's going on? Do I need to be concerned?
Thanks for bearing with me!
