XP SP2 shuts down after resuming from hibernation

Hi

Last summer everything worked - hibernating my P4 3.0GHz computer with 1GB
of ram and resuming it was a daily ruotine. During the winter I have left
the computer on during nights, but the summer is looming and I've had to
hibernate for the night.

Now, the computer hibernates fine, but just after resuming, and when the
desktop becomes visible, the computer starts to shut down and eventually it
seems that Windows shuts the computer down in a very controlled (and fast!)
manner.

Only changed hardware is Geforce 6600GT -> 7900GS (PCI-E) and a new nVdia
driverr version. No other hardware changes, and only a few software changes.
Norton Ghost has been changed to Seagate DiscWizard (powered by Acronis
TrueImage), and Avast anti-virus has been constantly been updated. And all
Windows Update patches have been installed.

How should I continue to try to debug this problem? Shutting down all
running programs before trying to hibernate doesn't seem to help, so the
problem must be somewhere deeper. But where?

Haven't a clue BUT "hibernate" has always been problematic for
me so I just use "standby".

Standby is not an option to me, as it doesn't shut down the cooling fans
that are not connected to motherboard FAN connectors.

Try this: In your power options, set system standby to 1 min and see what
happens. Make sure welcome screen is set to appear when you wake it up,
then
after waking it, click your account, and see if you get a serious error...
for more info on what I'm talking about, see my post on similar issue:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...ee26-48f8-b627-74bcb5d3bf31&lang=en&cr=US&p=1

Tested the standby function (for the first time ever). Resuming from
standby, I only got an empty desktop background and constantly lighted HDD
led. Waited for 5 minutes, didn't go anywhere -> reset-button was the only
solution.

Maybe I'll now go google the "cannot resume from standby" -problems as well,
in hope of solving my resume from hibernate -problem.

It's the video adapter driver that's most likely causing the issue. See
if nVidia has a slightly older driver package then the one installed now.
At least that's what I've found to be the cause of hibernation/sleep
issues ... YMMV

No luck, but haven't had the time to very actively look, though. My twice
daily computer usage time goes to starting up system and all the required
software, doing what I need to do, and then getting all shut down -
Hibernate sure is a big (30min a day) time saver here..... MowGreen [MVP]:s
suggestion to use earlier nVidia drivers didn't help either.

I'll propably not reinstall windows for this problem - I'm going to order
new Core 2 Duo hardware anyway later in the summer so having to install
windows+software twice isn't a very good option either. But boy will I be
angry if the new hardware will have the same issue after clean install and
the software I use and windows updates...
